Ben Shemen Forest is the largest forest in Central Israel and it contains several archaeological sites, including Bir a Shemi, Tel Gimzo, Tel Hadid, and several Hasmonean-period tombs.

A small fragment of an Assyrian stele with an Akkadian inscription was found in the Ben Shemen Forest and it presumably comes from of of the ancient cities located within it, possibly Tel Hadid. The monument probably dates to the reign of the 7th-century B.C. king Esarhaddon.
